      Andrew Martin Vander Vegt died on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at GracePoint Crossing in Cambridge. He was 86 years old.

      He was born on Nov. 27, 1922 to Fredrick and Jacoba (De Boer) Vander Vegt in Ogilvie, the oldest of seven children. Early in life the family moved to a farm near Pipestone and to southeastern Minnesota before moving back to Kanabec County where heworked with his parents and siblings on the family farm. He attended school in Kanabec County and graduated the eighth grade from Mora Schools.

      During World War II, he and his brother Martin were drafted into the Army. After final training on the Philippine island of Luzon, he and his fellow soldiers were en route to invade Japan when the war ended. After arriving in Japan, he served in amilitary construction crew and spent the remainder of his time as a heavy equipment operator helping rebuild the Tokyo airport. He received an honorable discharge from the Army on Nov. 12, 1946.

      He worked for a farmer in Washington before returning to Minnesota where he worked on the family farm west of Ogilvie. There he met his future wife, Sadie Werkhoven. They were united in marriage on April 12, 1950 at the Ogilvie Christian Reformed Church. They then moved to a small rented farm near Knife Lake. In 1951 they purchased a farm in Comfort Township where they raised their family of three sons. The couple remained on that farm until their retirement in 1985 at which time they movedto Westwood Circle in Mora.

      When Sadie contracted an aggressive form of rheumatoid arthritis, he took loving care of her until her death in May 1992. On Jan. 27, 1996 he was united in marriage to Arlene Anderson, the widow of Rev. Elwood Anderson. After he suffered a stroke,they moved to a retirement community in Cambridge. After a second stroke, he required full-time care at the GracePoint Crossing West where he passed away.

      He was noted for his farming expertise and received a number of awards for high milk production. His favorite pastimes included reading and fishing. He taught his children and grandchildren to fish and loved fishing with his brothers and friends. He also enjoyed making wooden toys, wooden lawn and yard decorations.

      Throughout his life he remained true to his faith in God and was always faithful in his service for the Lord. He was a member of Ogilvie Reformed Church where he served on the consistory. In 1984 he and Sadie joined Quamba Baptist Church where he was active on the deacon board, building committee and in other various duties. After his marriage to Arlene, he joined Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mora where he was active in many roles supporting the church.

      He was loved by many people and will be greatly missed.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sadie; brother, Martin; and sister, Margaret.

      He is survived by wife, Arlene of Cambridge; son, David (Sherrie) of Mora; grandson, Jonathon (Angel); granddaughter, Lynn; son, Stanley (Mely); grandchildren, James (Monica) of Torrance, Calif.; son Jerry (Susan) of Mora; grandchildren Mike, Amanda, Ryan and Alycia; brothers, Fritz (Eileen) of Ogilvie, Hank (Betty) of Milaca, Gerald (Rose) of Grand Rapids, Mich.; sister, Jeanette (Richard) Clark of Ogilvie; brother-in-law, Bert Statema of Steward; sister-in-law, Bertha Vander Vegt of Concrete, Wash.; many nieces, nephews and friends.

      Funeral services were on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009 at Quamba Baptist Church in Quamba. Rev. Ivan Fiske officiated. Music was provided by Pat Gabrielson and Phil Halvorson.

      Pallbearers were Mike Vander Vegt, James Vander Vegt, Jonathan Vander Vegt, Ryan Vander Vegt, John Teichroew and Melvin Kadlec. Military honors were provided by Mora American Legion Post 201.
